Two ways in

Practice can start in the next minute.

Sign & Talk runs in your browser. There is nothing to install, nothing to unlock, and no store account to set up first. Open it, allow the microphone once, and make your first attempt.

The web app

The full product, in the browser you already have. Works on a laptop, a tablet and a phone. Your lesson path, attempt history and allowance are attached to your account, so signing in anywhere picks up exactly where you stopped.

The Android app

The Android build is being prepared for Google Play under the package com.vinxign.signandtalk. It is not listed yet, so we are not going to show you a store button that goes nowhere. Until it is, open the web app in Chrome on your phone: it is the same product, and your progress will carry over when the app arrives.

Before you start

Four small things that make the first session work.

Ready

A quiet-enough room

You do not need silence. You need a room where a fan, a television or a conversation is not sitting on top of your voice. Background noise is the most common reason an attempt cannot be scored.

Ready

Headphones, if you use sound at all

Headphones are optional and never required. If you do use residual hearing or amplification, they keep the app audio out of the microphone, which makes the recording cleaner.

Ready

A mirror, or your front camera

Many first sounds are made at the lips or the teeth, where you can see them. Being able to watch your own mouth turns the articulation cue into something you can check yourself.

Ready

Eight minutes, not an hour

Short and frequent beats long and occasional. Plan a session you will repeat tomorrow rather than one you will dread.

System requirements

What it actually needs.

Nothing exotic. If you can watch a video and join a call on the device, you can practise on it.

System requirements for using Sign & Talk
WhatYou needWhy
BrowserA current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or SafariThe app uses the standard browser recording API. Very old browsers cannot record, so the practice screens will not work on them.
MicrophoneAny built-in or plug-in microphoneA laptop or phone microphone is enough. You do not need a studio microphone to get a usable recording.
PermissionMicrophone access allowed for app.signandtalk.comYour browser asks once. If you block it by accident, you can change it again from the padlock or settings icon in the address bar.
ConnectionA working internet connectionEach attempt is uploaded and analysed, so the app needs to be online while you practise. It is not an offline app.
AndroidAndroid 7.0 (Nougat) or later, once the app is listedThe Android build targets this floor. Until the Play listing is public, the browser app is the way in on Android too.
ScreenAny size, from a phone upwardsThe practice screens work on a phone. A larger screen makes the articulation diagrams easier to read.

Sign & Talk is educational practice software. It does not diagnose or treat anything, and it is not a replacement for a speech-language pathologist or an audiologist.

Your first session

Five steps, about eight minutes.

Open the app and sign in

Go to app.signandtalk.com. Create an account or sign in. For safety, only one device can stay signed in at a time — signing in here signs out other devices. Your lesson path and practice history stay on the account.

Allow the microphone once

The browser shows a permission prompt the first time a practice screen needs to record. Choose allow. Nothing is recorded until you start an attempt yourself.

Read the cue before you record

Every sound comes with a visual articulation cue: where in the mouth it is formed, whether air is stopped or flowing, and whether it is voiced. Read it first. The cue is the instruction, not the score.

Record when you are ready

There is no countdown and no timer pushing you. Start the recording, say the sound, stop. If the audio comes back unusable, that attempt is not counted against your monthly allowance, so a false start costs you nothing.

Read the feedback, then try once more

You get a score together with a written explanation of what to change. Nothing important is delivered as audio only. Make one adjustment, try again, and stop while it is still going well.

Not sure which sound to begin with? Start here, or read how the practice loop works.

Opening and installing

Questions people ask first.

Do I have to install anything to start?

No. Sign & Talk runs in your browser at app.signandtalk.com. Open the link, sign in, and you are practising. There is no download, no app store account and no waiting.

Is there an Android app on Google Play?

Not yet. The Android build is being prepared for a Google Play listing under the package com.vinxign.signandtalk, and it will need Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later. We would rather say that plainly than show you a store button that goes nowhere. In the meantime the browser app works on an Android phone: open it in Chrome and it behaves the same way.

Is there an iPhone or iPad app?

There is no iOS app. On an iPhone or iPad, use the web app in Safari or Chrome. If Safari asks for microphone permission, allow it, and the practice screens work the same as anywhere else.

The app cannot hear me. What now?

Check three things in order. First, the permission: open the padlock or settings icon in your address bar and confirm microphone access is allowed for the site. Second, the input device: if a headset is plugged in, your computer may be listening through it rather than the built-in microphone. Third, the room: move away from a fan, a window or a television and try again.

Can I practise without an internet connection?

No. Each attempt is uploaded and analysed before you get a score, so the app needs to be online while you practise. You can read your past results whenever you are back online.

Can I use it on a phone and a laptop?

Yes. Sign in with the same account on both. Your lesson path, attempt history and remaining allowance are attached to the account rather than to a device, so you can start on a laptop and continue on a phone.

Do I need to pay before I can look around?

Plans and what each one includes are set out in full on the pricing page. Subscribe in the app when you are ready. Nothing on this page asks you for a card.

Nothing to install
